Veneers Q & A

New Hope Dentist

What does a veneer do?

A veneer is a small piece of porcelain that’s created in the exact shape of the tooth it’s going to replace. If a tooth is abnormally small or misshapen, Dr. Sharma will create a tooth-shaped, very thin piece of porcelain that can be attached to the surface of the existing tooth.

Veneers are used to correct visible and structural abnormalities and make teeth look uniform and natural. They are attached to the surface of the existing tooth with a strong bonding agent that holds the veneer in place. Veneers can be placed on both the front and back of teeth to correct problems that occur on either side.

Are veneers permanent?

Veneers are designed to be a permanent fixture on the surface of teeth. The bonding agent used to attach the porcelain to the tooth needs a rough surface to stick. To create this roughened surface, Dr. Sharma will have to sand the delicate enamel that covers the tooth.

Once the surface has been prepared, she’ll attach the bonding agent to the tooth and apply the veneer to it. The veneer will be allowed to cure so the bonding agent has time to firmly secure the two surfaces together. Once the process is finished, the veneer will remain in place permanently.

What kind of issues can veneers correct?

Veneers can be used to cover any number of structural and visual abnormalities, a few of which include:

  • Heavily stained teeth
  • Chipped or broken teeth
  • Abnormally small teeth
  • Teeth that are oddly shaped
  • Gaps or spaces between teeth
  • Teeth that have been cracked or damaged in other ways

Dr. Sharma can attach veneers that are the same basic shape, size, and color as your existing teeth. This provides a more natural look that enhances your smile. Once veneers have been in put in place, they are intended to last a lifetime. If they break or are damaged, however, they need to be immediately replaced to protect the tooth below.
